Josh Barney is Vice President of J.J. Barney Construction. He is responsible for setting the overall direction for the company, overseeing the company’s business operations, company safety, and legal matters. He is a seasoned construction industry leader with extensive experience in executive management, strategic planning, and board governance. With a career spanning multiple decades, he has built a strong reputation for driving operational excellence, fostering safety and compliance, and guiding organizations through complex growth and infrastructure challenges
As a member of multiple Boards of Directors within construction and development sectors, Josh has played a pivotal role in shaping organizational strategy, strengthening governance structures, and ensuring fiscal responsibility His ability to balance long-term vision with on-the-ground realities, helping organizations deliver successful projects while maintaining strong stakeholder and community relationships. As the Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Construction Association of Michigan (CAM), Josh played a key role in enhancing governance practices, overseeing financial performance, supporting executive leadership transitions, and guiding strategic planning initiatives. He is known for his collaborative leadership style, sound judgement, and ability to align diverse stakeholders towards common goals. He also serves on CAM’s Labor Negotiations and Government Affairs committees and teaches construction courses at CAM.
In addition to board service, Josh is an adjunct professor of construction law and contracts at Oakland Community College, bringing extensive real-world experience and legal insight to the classroom. His teaching emphasizes the intersection of law and construction practice, helping students understand how effective legal frameworks support successful project delivery.
A strong advocate for ethical leadership and community engagement, Josh frequently lectures at seminars for construction, legal, and business groups and has been published in numerous legal, business, and academic publications promoting diversity, education, workforce development, and sustainability.
In 2020, Josh was selected as one of Oakland County’s “Elite 40 Under 40,” an annual list honoring passionate and talented leaders in a variety of fields that are committed to their professions and improving their communities.
Josh holds a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from DePaul University College of Law and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan.
